Highland Park Thor

Highland Park Thor

Here are the tasting notes of one of my favorite bottles, namely the fabulous Highland Park Thor! First whisky from the Valhalla collection, followed by Loki, Freya and Odin (in this order). Highland Park has found the vein to tickle lovers of pretty boxes and, by the way, fans of Nordic mythology. I have to admit that I also bought this box as soon as it was released, without tasting it first… If I have regrets? Only one: not having bought 3 bottles at once

Glen Grant 40yo 1973 by Samaroli

Glen Grant 40yo

Today I have the pleasure to share my tasting notes of a Glen Grant 40yo distilled in 1973, aged in sherry casks and bottled by Samaroli in 2013. That’s not every day that we have the pleasure to taste a so aged Speyside and, when it comes, we always expects a great moment of pleasure. As Samaroli is one of the last Italian whisky trading companies, which bottled some of the most researched bottles, expectations are even greater. And it’s even better when it’s offered :p (Thanks Jurgen!)

Macduff 33yo Golden Cask

Macduff 33yo

For your next sunless day, I suggest you to discover a whisky that will brighten your day, the Macduff 33yo by… Macduff. Have to say it’s not the same Macduff as the one from the distillery, maybe they’re from the same family but this one is an independent bottler. Well, we don’t care, there are certainly a lot of Macduff in Scotland. This whisky (47.5%), from the collection “The Golden Cask Reserve”, is a limited edition of 125 bottles  and comes from the CM210 cask. Here we go for the tasting notes 😀

Ardbeg Galileo

Ardbeg Galileo

Peat lovers, today I’ll introduce to you the Ardbeg Galileo… You know? This famous whisky that we sent into space to study the impact of gravity on its maturation. The whisky you’ll drink here isn’t the one they sent in space eh, this is just the same whisky that was bottled to celebrate this unusual event. Aged in ex-bourbon casks (first filling) and Marsala, it has an alcohol level of 49%. So, will this whisky take us to infinity and beyond?

Aberlour A’Bunadh Batch 49

Aberlour A'Bunadh

If there is a real must-have bottle when you appreciate whisky, especially cask strenght, it’s the Aberlour A’Bunadh. Non cold filtered, aged in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled directly out of the barrel, it is a full of character Speyside that always pleases, whatever the batch. This batch #49 is nevertheless one of the best (at least of those that I’ve tasted). Here come the tasting notes 😀

Macduff Christmas 2017 by Malts of Scotland

Macduff Christmas 2017 bottling

Macduff is a Speyside distillery producing the Glen Deveron whisky, you’ll find Macduff named whisky only by independent bottlers, such as here with Malts of Scotland. This special bottling of Macduff Christmas 2017 is a 17yo whisky aged in sherry cask.

Mackmyra Skördetid

mackmyra

Today, let’s discover some Swedish whisky with a nice single malt, the Mackmyra Skördetid (46.1%). This one is a special bottling from their seasonal range, this Macmyra Skördetid has spend some time in old barrels of Amarone Masi Costasera (Masi is an Italian house, world famous for its wines). Before this special ending, this whisky spent time in bourbon barrels, American oak, sherry Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez… Just that. That sounds great, isn’t it? Let’s see if he lives up to his promises.

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch

Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch

I’m testing another single grain, with some hope that this Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch (50%) will meet my expectations, and a little bit more than the recent Teeling that disappointed me a bit (I have to say that I expected a real good surprise). This one comes from the Kentucky Buffalo Trace distillery. A single grain coming from the country of bourbon just has to be good, isn’t it?

Glendronach Allardice 18yo

Glendronach Allardice

The 18-year-old Glendronach Allardice (46% – 2017) is a single malt aged in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, which was put on the market at the initiative of the new owner of the distillery. An happy initiative? We discover this right now 😀

Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or

Glenmorangie Nectar d'or

When you start discovering whisky, Glenmorangie is a must-have label, especially when you have the (pretty good) idea to try its special finishes, such as the Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or finished in Sauternes casks.
